His Migration to Madinah

The Divine Commandment

After the conference ended and the disbelievers went to their homes, Sayyiduna Jibra'eel عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام came and revealed the commandment of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ: 'O Beloved! Do not go to sleep on your bed tonight. Migrate to Madinah.'

Visiting Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq

Hence, in the sunny afternoon, he صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم went to the home of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ and said, 'I have to discuss something with you in private.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ humbly said, 'Ya Rasoolallah! May my parents be sacrificed for you! There is none except your spouse (i.e. Sayyidatuna 'Aaishah رَضِیَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهَا).'

He صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم said, 'O Abu Bakr! Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has allowed me to migrate.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ humbly said, 'May my parents be sacrificed for you! Let me also have the privilege of accompanying you.' He صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم accepted his request.

The Two She-Camels

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ had been feeding the leaves of acacia tree to two she-camels for four months so that he رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ along with the Holy Nabi صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم would migrate, riding on them. He رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ humbly said, 'Ya Rasoolallah! Please accept one of these she-camels.' He صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم accepted, saying, 'But I will pay you for it.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ unwillingly but respectfully agreed to accept the payment.

Sayyidatuna Asma and the Waistband

At that time, Sayyidatuna 'Aaishah رَضِیَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهَا was too young to make preparations for the journey. Hence her elder sister, Sayyidatuna Asma رَضِیَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهَا, arranged for the provisions. She kept food in a box. Then, tearing her waistband1 into two, she tied the box with one part of her waistband and the mouth of the water-bag with the other. It was a great privilege for her and hence she was given the title ذات النطاقین — i.e. the female who has two waistbands.

The Guide to Madinah

There was a disbeliever, 'Abdullah Bin Urayqat, who knew routes very well. He صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم hired him so that he would show the way. Then, handing over those two she-camels to 'Abdullah Bin Urayqat, he صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم said, 'Bring these two she-camels to the Cave of Saur after three nights.' Having made all of these arrangements, he صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم came to his blessed home.

Notes

  1. Waistband: a belt-like strip of cloth that fastens around the waist.
